Vision for Ward 2

While talking with neighbors throughout Ward 2, a few topics come up over and over again which have influenced my developing platform

  • A Sense of Community

I have learned the best way to get to know people is by working with them. During the last 3.5 years I have hosted Town Halls throughout Ward 2. Focusing on building community, we have discussed crime, road safety, boat ramps, and development. I appreciate the time and energy that our community volunteers provide. My goal for the next 4 years is to continue down this path - working with community action groups to make our communities safer, more environmentally friendly and a place for all.

  • Environment

Over the past 3.5 years, working in conjunction with my colleagues on the Council, I have helped increase funding for Annapolis' Tree Canopy program, worked to beautify neighborhoods during Greenscape, and initiated the Yard-to-Table garden program. In the next term I want to expand Greenscape activities to every neighborhood in Ward 2, enhance the Electric Leaf Blower Voucher Program to entice more people to make the switch and create more opportunity for water access.

  • Walkability & Bike-ability

During my first campaign I had the goal of improving walking routes by adding crosswalks, signage and sidewalks. One of my proudest moments was to christen the newly poured Cedar Park Road sidewalk - a project almost 20 years in the making. I also help to obtain studies for future sidewalks on Farragut, more of Cedar Park Road and Ridgely Avenue.

  • Traffic

Route 50 spill-over traffic has crippled our neighborhoods; we need to work on signage to keep drivers on Route 50 on high-traffic days. Our Traffic Engineer is working on this and we will be presented with options in early summer 2025.

We have been working on several dangerous intersections, including Windell at  Cedar Park Road where we installed a center median and moved the crosswalk so children don't have to double cross to get to school. I plan to continue to add sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes and address speed limits.

  • Recreation Areas

Robert Eades Park is slated to begin construction in late 2025 - a project that has been more than 6 years in development. We also need to address the lack of play areas, including playgrounds, and basketball hoops.  I plan to continue to advocate for more recreation for children and adults.

  • Dog Park

Eight years ago, a dog park was promised in Ward 2 but was never completed. This was a goal of my first term but a suitable space has not yet been identified. I will continue to seek space to install a dog park so that the neighborhood dogs have a safe and open place to play.

  • Public Safety

Having served on the Public Safety Committee for the past 3.5 years I have learned about our police department, how the Office of Emergency Management operates and the struggles our fire department has with staffing and equipment.

For my 2nd term I want to organize new and revitalize old Neighborhood Watch programs in Ward 2. For example, at one time Admiral Heights had a strong program that led to a number of solved crimes. We need to re-launch and expand this under-utilized program in all neighborhoods throughout the Ward.

  • Neighborhood Gardens

With the help of two very dedicated community members, Shirley Gordon and Lori Miller, we were able to create and launch the "Yard to Table" program, providing 3x3 raised bed gardens to over 20 residents in the Clay Street area.  Many of these gardens are still flourishing.  In my next term I hope to expand that program to other Wards in the city and enhance the program to include young entrepreneurs interested in learning to build and maintain the gardens.

  • Improve Water Access

Over the past three and a half years I have been able to promote three new street-end parks and have been involved in the expansion of the Tucker Street Boat Ramp - construction should begin late 2025 and be complete in time for the 2026 boating season.

  • Traffic Calming

Early in my first term I started meeting with the West Annapolis Civic Association to discuss the speed issues on Melvin Avenue.  By 2023 we installed a series of "chokers" on Melving to reduce speeding.  WACA members planted native plants in the center of the chokers.

If elected, I plan to continue to look for speeding solutions: speed cameras on roadways and "road diets" in areas where the wide road causes cars to speed.

  • Noise and Light Pollution

This is one area where I plan to focus more attention on in my next term.  Utilizing partnerships with the State Highway Association and the County will help plant more trees, creating a sound barrier.

We also need to work with NAAA to manage Navy Stadium public address system volume, as well as reduce light pollution generated from Navy Stadium lights left on when no events are occurring.

  • Expand the Main Streets Program

This is a program I plan to focus on next.  The current Main Streets Program is for the downtown area. I want to expand it to the Clay Street Community. The Main Streets Program is vital to community and business development.
